What Is a Pleural Effusion?
A pleural effusion is a build-up of fluid in the space between the lung and the chest wall (the pleural space). It can cause breathlessness, chest heaviness, and a dry cough. Causes include infection (parapneumonic effusion), heart failure, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, and inflammatory conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
Investigation by a Chest Specialist is essential to identify the underlying cause — because treatment depends entirely on what’s driving the fluid accumulation.
Lung Nodules — What Do They Mean?
Lung nodules are small spots on the lung found incidentally on chest CT or X-ray. Most are benign — old infections, scar tissue, or calcified granulomas — but some require monitoring or further investigation to rule out early lung cancer. Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Pulmonary Fibrosis
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a group of conditions causing progressive scarring of the lung tissue. The most common form is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Symptoms include a dry cough, progressive breathlessness, and fatigue. Early specialist review by a Chest Physician is critical — antifibrotic medications can slow progression significantly if started early.
