Breathing problems are easy to dismiss as “just a cold” or “winter air” — but sometimes they’re a sign of something that needs expert attention. Knowing when to see a Respiratory Doctor could make a significant difference to your long-term lung health.

At Southwest Pulmonary & Sleep Centre (SWCPC), based in Oran Park, we see patients from across South West Sydney who have often been managing symptoms for months — or even years — before seeking specialist care. This guide is designed to help you recognise the warning signs earlier.

What Does a Respiratory Doctor Do?

A Respiratory Doctor — also called a Respiratory Physician or Respiratory Specialist — is a medical specialist trained specifically in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect your lungs, airways, and breathing. They work beyond the scope of a GP, using advanced testing such as lung function tests, CT scans, and sleep studies to get to the root cause of your symptoms.

7 Signs You Should See a Respiratory Doctor

1. A Cough That Won’t Go Away

A cough lasting more than 3–4 weeks — especially one that doesn’t respond to standard treatment — is one of the most common reasons patients visit our Oran Park clinic. Persistent cough can be caused by asthma, GORD (acid reflux), postnasal drip, or in some cases, more serious conditions like COPD or lung cancer. Don’t ignore it.

2. Shortness of Breath

If you find yourself getting breathless walking up stairs, during light exercise, or even at rest — this is a red flag. Shortness of breath can indicate asthma, COPD, heart failure, pulmonary embolism, or interstitial lung disease. A Respiratory Physician can run the right tests to find out why.

3. Frequent Chest Infections

Getting chest infections more than twice a year, or struggling to recover fully between infections, can point to an underlying lung condition such as bronchiectasis, asthma, or immune deficiency. Recurring infections should always be investigated by a Respiratory Specialist.

4. Wheezing or Noisy Breathing

A whistling or wheezing sound when you breathe — particularly when exhaling — can be a sign of narrowed airways. This is commonly associated with asthma but can also occur in COPD, anaphylaxis, or airway obstruction. If your wheezing isn’t fully controlled with current treatment, a Respiratory Doctor can reassess your diagnosis and management plan.

5. Coughing Up Blood

Coughing up blood (haemoptysis) should always be investigated promptly. While it can have benign causes such as a minor throat irritation, it can also indicate a more serious condition including infection, pulmonary embolism, or lung cancer. Please don’t delay — book an urgent appointment with your GP and ask for a referral to a Respiratory Physician.

6. Unexplained Fatigue or Poor Exercise Tolerance

If you’re consistently more tired than you should be, or your stamina has dropped noticeably without explanation, your lungs may not be doing their job efficiently. Poor oxygen exchange, undiagnosed sleep apnoea, or chronic respiratory disease can all cause these symptoms. A Lung Specialist at SWCPC can investigate with a thorough assessment.

7. An Abnormal Chest X-Ray or CT Finding

If your GP has referred you after finding a lung nodule, shadow, or other abnormality on imaging, you should see a Respiratory Physician promptly. Our team at SWCPC is experienced in reviewing and investigating abnormal chest imaging, and will explain findings clearly and calmly.

When Is It an Emergency?

Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately if you experience: sudden severe shortness of breath, chest pain with breathing, coughing up large amounts of blood, or blue lips or fingertips. These are medical emergencies.
