A Lung Specialist — also known as a Lung Doctor or Lung Physician — is a medical specialist with advanced training in diagnosing and treating diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. They go beyond the scope of a general practitioner, using specialised diagnostic tools and clinical expertise to identify and manage both common and complex lung conditions.

At SWCPC, our Lung Specialists are fully trained respiratory physicians — meaning they hold specialist qualifications recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and are registered with AHPRA.

When Should You See a Lung Specialist?

You should see a Lung Doctor if you are experiencing any of the following:

• Shortness of breath — at rest, during activity, or that is getting worse over time
• A persistent cough lasting more than 3–4 weeks
• Coughing up blood or discoloured mucus
• Frequent chest infections or pneumonia
• Wheezing or noisy breathing
• Unexplained weight loss alongside breathing problems
• Abnormal findings on a chest X-ray or CT scan
• A lung condition that isn’t responding to GP treatment

Do You Need a Referral?

A GP referral is required to see our Lung Specialists and to access Medicare rebates. If you don’t yet have a referral, speak to your GP about your symptoms and ask to be referred to Southwest Pulmonary & Sleep Centre in Oran Park.
