Chest pain and breathing difficulties are among the most alarming symptoms a person can experience. While many people immediately think of the heart, a significant number of chest symptoms are respiratory in origin — and require the expert eye of a Chest Doctor, not a cardiologist. At Southwest Pulmonary & Sleep Centre (SWCPC) in Oran Park, our Chest Specialists work alongside GPs and cardiologists to ensure patients get the right diagnosis and the right treatment.
Respiratory Causes of Chest Pain
Many conditions affecting the chest, lungs, and airways can cause pain, tightness, or pressure in the chest that is easily confused with cardiac symptoms. Common respiratory causes of chest pain include:
- Pleuritis (pleurisy) — inflammation of the lining around the lungs, causing sharp pain that worsens with breathing
- Pneumonia — chest pain accompanied by fever, cough, and breathlessness
- Pneumothorax — a collapsed lung, causing sudden sharp chest pain and shortness of breath
- Pleural effusion — fluid around the lungs, causing pressure and dull chest discomfort
- Pulmonary embolism — a blood clot in the lungs, causing sudden chest pain and breathlessness (a medical emergency)
- Asthma — chest tightness and wheeze, often worse at night or during exercise
- Costochondritis — inflammation of the cartilage connecting ribs to the sternum, causing localised chest wall pain
If you have unexplained or recurring chest pain, always seek medical attention. If you have sudden severe chest pain, call 000 immediately.
What Does a Chest Doctor Assess?
When you see a Chest Specialist at SWCPC, your consultation will typically include:
- A detailed history of your symptoms, including onset, duration, and triggers
- Physical examination of your chest and breathing
- Review of any existing investigations (X-rays, ECG, blood tests)
- Spirometry (lung function testing) where indicated
- Referral for CT chest or further imaging if required
- Interpretation of findings and a clear management plan
Our Chest Doctors work closely with cardiologists when heart conditions need to be ruled out or co-managed — ensuring nothing is missed.
