Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the most common conditions managed by our Respiratory Doctors at Southwest Pulmonary & Sleep Centre (SWCPC) in Oran Park. It is Australia’s second most common cause of preventable hospitalisation — yet most patients aren’t diagnosed until the disease is already moderate to severe. If you’re a smoker or ex-smoker with persistent breathlessness, cough, or frequent chest infections, it’s time to see a Respiratory Physician.
What Is COPD?
COPD is a progressive, irreversible lung disease that makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. It includes two main conditions: emphysema (destruction of air sacs) and chronic bronchitis (persistent airway inflammation). The primary cause is long-term exposure to cigarette smoke, but occupational dusts, fumes, and air pollution also contribute. In Australia, approximately 1 in 13 people over 40 have COPD — and many don’t know it.
Warning Signs of COPD
- Persistent cough — often dismissed as “smoker’s cough”
- Breathlessness during everyday activities that has worsened over time
- Wheezing or chest tightness
- Frequent winter chest infections
- Increased mucus or phlegm production
- Reduced stamina — needing to stop and catch breath
If you recognise these symptoms — especially if you have a smoking history — ask your GP for a referral to a Respiratory Doctor at SWCPC Oran Park. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly slows disease progression.
How We Diagnose COPD at SWCPC
Our Respiratory Physicians diagnose COPD using spirometry — a simple breathing test performed on-site at our Oran Park clinic. Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how fast, revealing the degree of airflow obstruction. We also assess your symptoms, smoking history, occupational exposures, and chest imaging to determine the severity of your COPD and guide treatment.
COPD Treatment at SWCPC Oran Park
While COPD cannot be cured, our Respiratory Specialists develop personalised treatment plans that can dramatically improve your quality of life and slow disease progression:
- Smoking cessation support — the single most effective treatment for slowing COPD
- Long-acting bronchodilators (LABA/LAMA) — to open airways and reduce breathlessness
- Inhaled corticosteroids — for frequent exacerbators
- Pulmonary rehabilitation referral — exercise and education programs that improve exercise tolerance and quality of life
- Vaccination — influenza and pneumococcal vaccines to reduce infection risk
- Home oxygen assessment — for patients with low resting oxygen levels
- Exacerbation management planning — a written action plan so you know what to do when symptoms worsen
